Over 800 Taliban rebels have started a major offensive in southern Afghanistan to try to acquire territory recently vacated by US army.


Officials said Wednesday that 40 civilians were killed in five days of clashes. Almost 100 Taliban have been killed, the Interior Ministry said.


Taliban attacks centered on the Sangin district of Helmand province, a hotbed of fighting during the 13-year insurgency.
