The United States Air Force started on an Atlas 5 rocket carrying highly developed GPS 2F satellite, the seventh in a series of 12 spacecraft planned to put back the older GPS satellites presently in orbit.
The GPS constellation, which along with ground stations provides global positioning signals for army and resident users in entire world, presently adds 31 satellites, with 24 required to be fully operational.
The first GPS 2F was opened in 2010. The $245 million spacecraft are designed to serve for almost 12 years.
