The German Chancellor Angela Merkel said that the guards being used by Hamas were of “a completely new quality” which needed a reaction from Israel.
“When attacked like this, Israel as any other country must defend itself” she declared in affront of news reporters in press conference.
Merkel said both sides would have to create “painful compromises” in order to finish the continuing clash. Her comments approach after Israel launched an overnight raid into the Gaza Strip after ten days of airstrikes.
Almost 23 Palestinians and one Israeli soldier have been killed since the ground operation started.
