Indian home minister Sushil kumar Shinde, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi and Gujarat CM Narendra Modi refused to meet a senior US Congress delegation in New Delhi yesterday as protest against the arrest of India’s deputy consul general Devyani Khobragade in New York.

India also asked the US consular officers to return all ID cards. This move may be for reviewing immunity and benefits enjoyed by US consular officers in India.

Union external affairs minister Salman Khurshid has condemned the arrest of deputy consul general Devyani Khobragade in public as an “insult”..

He said “We consider it as an insult. We are waiting for US response and do the needful after it is received”.

In a major diplomatic embarrassment, Khobragade, a 1999-batch IFS officer, was arrested on a street in New York as she was dropping her daughter to school on December 12 and handcuffed in public on visa fraud charges afterwards released on a $250,000 bond after pleading not guilty in court.

The diplomat has been charged with submitting false documents and information while applying for a visa for a “babysitter and housekeeper” she brought from India
