A 5.7-magnitude quake struck the coast of northeast Japan on Friday, seismologists said, however, there were no instant casualties found.

The United States Geological Survey said, the earthquake hit at 7:42 am (2242 GMT Friday) eight kilometers east-northeast of the city of Miyako at a depth of 44 kilometers. The Japan Meteorological Agency measured it at 5.8 and said there was no danger of a tsunami.

Japan is located at the conjuncture of several tectonic plates and experiences a number of relatively violent quakes every year.

But thanks to strict building codes, even powerful quakes that might cause destruction in other countries frequently pass without causing much casualties.

In May, a strong 6.0-magnitude earthquake shivered buildings in the capital Tokyo, which wounded 17 people.
