Beijing said it is in the process of removing an oil rig in disputed waters close the Paracel Islands – which Vietnam also claims.
Coast Guard Chief of Staff Admiral Ngo Ngoc Thu said the rig started their departure late on Tuesday and is anticipated to discover towards China’s Hainan Island.
The rig done the work on July 15, China Oilfield Services Ltd. said in a statement. Oil and gas put aside were discovered during drilling, China’s state-run Xinhua News Agency reported Wednesday.
China turned the rig into the challenged waters on May 2, sparking demonstrations from the Vietnamese government, which said it lay in their unshared economic zone.
China and Vietnam both declares the Paracel islands and in 1974 fought a brief clash over them.
