Moscow: Almost 12 people died and several were wounded after a train derailed in the Moscow metro in rush hour on Tuesday, city officials told.


The Russian national television explained scenes of chaos on the packed underground system, saying passengers fell like dominoes when the train braked suddenly. The accident is one of the most serious to strike the Moscow metro in recent years.

“At present we know that 12 people have died,” The Head Of Moscow’s Health Department, Georgy Golukhov told the international news reporters, said that over 100 people had been hospitalized and other 12-15 had searched for medical help.

Golukhov told to media that nearly 60 ambulances were put on duty at the scene, while one seriously wounded passenger was vacated by helicopter. According to international news reports said some people were considered to have been stranded in a train underground.


A spokesman for the emergencies ministry said in televised statement that the incident took place when a train braked abruptly after a wrong alarm.


Moscow mayor Sergei Sobyanin was at the scene and vowed to do everything probable to help the victims.
