Iraq says military have started assault to take back militant-seized Tikrit, the international news reported. The effort to take back Tikrit city, which fell on June 12 to Sunni rebels led by the extremist Islamic State group, started two-and-a-half weeks ago.


The Defense Ministry reported ground security forces backed by air support started their offensive at dawn against rebels, led by the al Qaeda offshoot the Islamic State, who have held Tikrit since mid-June.


However, the military and their militia allies get back Tikrit city, hometown of Saddam Hussein, it would be the first militants-seized city to get back to government hold since Iraq’s latest crisis flared up last month.
