India opens a bank for women


 


Indian Prime Minister inaugurated Tuesday, November 19 the first public bank for women to strengthen their security and financial independence after a series of sex crimes that have moved the country.


Manmohan Singh inaugurated the Bharatiya Mahila Bank (Indian women’s bank) in south Mumbai, financial capital of the country, in one of the seven agencies now open.


Announced in February, the bank will provide loans especially women, although men can also open an account. The project was unveiled when the India was in shock the gang rape of a student in New Delhi , died of his injuries.


In India, only 26% of women have a bank account. “A sad reality”, according to the Prime Minister: ”Women face discrimination and difficulties at home, at school, at work and in public places. Their social emancipation policy and economic remains a distant goal. Implementation of the Bharatiya Mahila Bank is a small step. ”




COOPERATIVE BANKS MANAGED BY WOMEN

The new public bank, headquartered in New Delhi, will have 25 branches by March and chaired by Usha Anantha subramanian, former leader of the Punjab National Bank. It aims to open 771 branches by seven years.


The Minister of Finance said that 10 billion rupees or 120 million had been budgeted for the institution, whose board of directors is composed of eight women. The bank employs 86 people in the country, over 55% are women, said an official of the group, on condition of anonymity.
