The former President of Pakistan, Pervez Musharraf, will be tried for treason, a crime punishable by the death penalty for having decreed a state of emergency in the country in 2007. The man is also accused of the murder of his former rival, Benazir Bhutto.
Pakistan will try former President Pervez Musharrav for treason for having imposed a state of emergency in 2007, announced Sunday, Nov. 17 the Interior Minister, Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan.
“This is the first time in the history of Pakistan,” a former army chief will be tried for treason, said Mr. Khan, at a press conference broadcast live on television, adding that “this decision was taken in the national interest. ”
In Pakistan, the crime of treason is punishable by death or life imprisonment.

The former Head of State is charged with the 2007 murder of his former rival Benazir Bhutto , the unilateral removal of judges in the same year, when he imposed a state of emergency, and died a year earlier of Akbar Bugti, a rebel leader in the volatile province of Balochistan (south-west) killed in a military operation.
Pervez Musharraf, 70, had led Pakistan from 1999 when he seized power in a coup, until his dismissal in August 2008, followed by his departure from the country. He ended his exile in March 2013, but was quickly overtaken by the justice who under house arrest in his luxurious villa in the capital.
