Millions watch streaming text long-awaited announcement of cricketer revered across television screens

Nehru Place is a unlovely electronics stores that spans more than half a square mile of South Delhi. Crowds agitation between stacks of computer equipment from its chipped, stained concrete arches.

But when the news that India had long awaited – and long feared – has finally burst, Nehru Place froze. Sachin Tendulkar, the best Indian cricketer known and arguably the most revered in the sports world, announced his retirement from cricket.

“Nobody could breathe,” said Amit Lal, an electronic merchant. “He will be missed in India. He is our master blaster more. Nobody plays like him. ”

Throughout the country similar scenes played. One moment, newsletters television were running “Breaking News” alerts about a hurricane approaching the East Coast and a live stream of a speech by the scion of the most famous dynasty politics of India, Rahul Gandhi. The next day, the two had disappeared. Millions watched the ad text of the diminutive Tendulkar streaming through the TV screens.

“All my life, I had a dream to play cricket in India,” he read. “I had this dream every day for the last 24 years. It’s hard for me to imagine a life without playing cricket because it’s all I’ve done since I was 11. I cannot wait to play my 200th test match home ground, as I call it a day. ”

Tendulkar probably some 40 years, is one of the greatest cricketers of all time. At age 15, the son of novelist notched up 326 in a partnership of 664 consecutive series, the highest recorded in the sport, with a friend. At age 16, he became the youngest Indian to make his Test debut, against Pakistan.

A year later, he hit his first Test century. The “Little Master” has become the most prolific batsman in the history of international cricket. But his extraordinary talent is only part of his extraordinary stature in his homeland where he is revered with an almost religious intensity.

“In 1989, we were nowhere really as a power in terms of sport, or financially. But as Sachin has increased, the Indian cricket has increased and the two have become fused in the minds of people. You see people react to it in a stadium and it’s as if they saw a god “, said Pradeep Magazine, a famous Indian sports journalist.

In 1991, Tendulkar’s career took off; the Indian government has pushed through radical economic reforms, triggering massive economic growth and social transformation. Tens of millions of households bought televisions for the first time. Indian authorities have sold the rights to broadcast cricket networks satellite TV for huge sums. Advertisers paid in cash.

But despite his fame and success Tendulkar remained humble, professional and grounded. Married with two children, his family life, except for a taste of Italian or German cars luxury was entirely traditional.

“It is a nice son and a good husband. It represents certain types of securities, despite the growth of India as a power of cricket and its own success, “said Pradeep Magazine.

Tendulkar is also known as a perfectionist worker who uses fans to Nehru Place – largely self-made or self-employed businessmen – and beyond.

“He had all the shots in the book, but what struck was his hunger for the game, not just the talent he was born with, but what he did with that talent,” Saurav Ganguly, a former India captain, told NDTV, a local television station.

The peak of his career Tendulkar has coincided with a period of intense economic growth and a new belief in rapid transformation of India a superpower. He was named player of the 2003 World Cup. In 2004, he hit 248 not the highest score. In 2008, he became the biggest test run-scorer ever. The Indian economy grew at an average of 9% per year, inspiring confidence even more, and sometimes grandiloquence. Indian cricket authorities were increasingly dominating the world.

“In all countries where there is a new wave of nationalism and identity and success in sport, it is identified in a particular personality. Sachin became the kind of nucleus around which everything revolved. Were other players, but they came and went away. Sachin was there all along, “said Alam Srinivas, an Indian author.

While the first Indian athlete to be nominated to the Rajya Sabha, the upper chamber of the National Assembly, Tendulkar also avoided politics – despite the efforts of successive governments. Then there are the financial rewards, another reason for its popularity. Forbes, the business magazine lists Tendulkar as the 51st highest paid athlete in the world with an income of more than $ 20 million this year sponsorship contracts and prizes.

The last test match played by the Little Master will on November 14, against the West Indies, probably in the commercial capital of India, Mumbai, where he lives in a five-story house in the trendy district of Bandra.

Form was Tendulkar fading for a long time. He gave no indication of what he would do with his new free time. It is unclear, in India which is seen once again that troubled but brilliant that his legacy will be.

Akshay Jha, a 11 year old waiting for his turn at bat during a game after school on the only patch of clear ground in the parking lot choked Nehru Place, had no doubt, however. “He’s the best, ever,” he said.
