This is the third postponement of the presidential election in the Maldives. The Supreme Court announced this Sunday, November 10 the suspension of the second round to be held today after the first round. The political crisis drags on and threatens the country’s stability.


The first election was held on September 6 in rather good conditions deemed by observers. But use led to two successive cancellations of the vote, the last dated October 19.


The favorite of this election is Mohammed Nasheed, the first democratically elected in 2008 after 30 years of dictatorship president. He was removed from power by a police mutiny in February 2012. His main rival is Abdullah Yameen, half-brother of former autocrat Maumoon Abdul Gayoom. This is the candidate who came in third place, Saturday, Nov. 9, which was postpone the vote on the grounds that it was necessary to give candidates time to campaign.


Institutional vacuum


The new date for the election is November 16, or the term of the outgoing President expires on Monday, November 11. The current head of state, Mohammed Waheed Hassan, announced he would resign from office when the constitutional time, plunging the country into a period of institutional vacuum.


The favorite denounces political maneuvers to remove the power and the risk of escalating political instability in Maldives worries the international community.
