Kurdish forces and Islamic State combatants were conflicting in a town only 40km southwest of the Kurdish regional capital of Arbil in northern Iraq on Wednesday, international news agencies reported.
Jabbar Yawar, secretary-general of the ministry of the Kurdish peshmerga combatants, described that 50,000 members of Iraq’s Yazidi ethnic minority ran away the offensive.
They are hiding on a mountain close to the town of Sinjar endangered hunger to death if they are not saved in 24 hours, Yawar told.
He further said that army cooperation had been re-instated with Baghdad in a bid to attack back against the Sunni militants.
