The fatality figure in southern China’s 6.1-magnitude quake has increased to 589 and more than 2,400 others have been wounded in the deadliest disaster of its kind in the region in four years. The bad affected was the town of Longtou.
Thousands of volunteers are presently at the place to find possible survivors, with rescue vehicles, ambulances and army jeeps lining the roads, news agencies reported.
High seismic activity is characteristic of the mountainous area of the Yunnan farming region, Ludian County. In 1970, a 7.7-magnitude earthquak in the same area left 15,000 people dead.
Before that, 2-year ago, a series of tremors killed 81 people.
