Baghdad: Iraq expects bunch of these 5 second-hand Jets will boost attempts to take back large parts of the country missing to insurgents.


The Iraq government has taken the delivery of Russian-made fighter jets and also expects, planes will help to retake captured cities from Sunni insurgents who have seized large parts of the country.


The Iraq army has confirmed five Sukhoi-25 planes which were purchased second-hand from Russia, had arrived in Baghdad on Saturday.


Images released by the defense ministry, it shows the fighter planes taxiing on a runway towards a hangar.


Military officials are banking on the aircraft boosting attempts by the military to take back territory captured by Sunni insurgents led by the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant previous this month.


International sources reported, the move to purchase these fighter planes from Russia was a rebuff to the US, had given word 34 F-16 fighters to the Iraqi. Source told the government was disappointed by hold ups with their delivery.


The international source said, “The Iraqis have Hellfire missiles that are not compatible with these new Russian Sukhoi jets.”
