German Chancellor Angela Merkel has threatened new sanctions against Russia could be put back on the agenda if progress in stabilizing the situation in Ukraine does not speed up.

On Wednesday, she admired Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko’s call for a unilateral ceasefire in eastern Ukraine.

Merkel also explained Russian President Vladimir Putin’s verdict to reject his right to interfere as “psychologically important.”

She told parliament, though, that “progress is slow” and “if nothing else works, sanctions can be put back on the agenda.”
