FIFA has protested against calls to boycott the 2018 World Cup in Russia, saying that a “policy of isolation or confrontation aren’t the most effective ways to solve problems.”

The World Cup could be a “powerful catalyst for constructive dialogue between people and governments,” football’s governing body emphasized.

The Dutch football association is delaying talks over the country’s participation in the 2018 event after the national day of bereavement to remember the victims of the Malaysia Airlines MH17 plane, two-thirds of who were from the Netherlands.

The passenger jet was reportedly targeted over Ukraine previous week, with the West accusing anti-Kiev insurgents, who they consider are supported by Russia.
