Venezuela’s former military intelligence chief, charged of taking part in drug trafficking by the US, was detained on the Caribbean island of Aruba while on diplomatic business, international news reports.

“The government rejects the illegal and arbitrary detention,” the foreign ministry described, when declaring news of the take into custody of military general Hugo Carvajal.

The imprisonment appeared as another ex-Venezuelan official was dragged into federal court in Miami, charged of taking bribes from South American drug cartels.
