Former World Bank economist Ashraf Ghani has came out as the victor of the second round of the Afghan presidential race, increasing 56.4 percent of the vote, the election commission chief said Monday.

His opponent, Abdullah Abdullah, picked up 43.4 percent, but according to local TV he is not accepting his loss. Ghani’s campaign said previous in the day they were going to audit 7,100 polling stations to ensure the vote was clean.

Both rounds of the vote to replace President Hamid Karzai have been plagued by accusations of fraud and other violations.

The US has also been watching the process, as outgoing President Hamid Karzai refused to sign a military cooperation pact with Washington, leaving this verdict to the country’s next leader.
